DESIGNING A LIFE-PROOF EMERGENCY PHONE

XPAL Power, Inc approached NextOfKin Creatives to create the world's only full functioning emergency phone powered by a single AA with a 15 year shelf life. Understanding the business strategy and target users behind this Energizer driven project, we knew that the product should have a simple demeanour and intuitive user interface to make it a coveted gadget.

As the product did not have any LCD information display, the archetype of the display screen was used to showcase the hero of this device - the iconic long lasting AA battery. We crafted the theme “Life-Proof” to describe the various needs scenarios the users would be faced with. The idea of “Life-Proof” was quickly adopted as the core ethos of the marketing strategy. We designed an intuitive layout with the Emergency button (for SOS calls) being the center of the button interface.

We designed an intuitive layout with the Emergency button (for SOS calls) being the center of the button interface. The other features we rationalized necessary were a slim form factor, tactile button designs, programmable phone-number memory and the universal LED torchlight.

BRAND COMMUNICATIONS

With the emergency phone and the AA battery as starting elements, we developed a logo with a clean and modern typeface to convey the innovation of the company and the emotional relevance of the products to the iconic common batteries.

PACKAGING DESIGN

Live Prepared. We designed a tough waterproof case and a floatable waterproof bag with talk-through containment and extreme temperature operation, and provides you a communication lifeline when all else is potentially destroyed.

The complete design process of strategizing the phone, features, brand ethos to the detailing and refinement of the outer appearance gave us a good control over the final qualitative robust look and feel of the product.
